What is a Death Café?

Once a quarter, I host an hour's free community event at a location in the Western Suburbs of Brisbane called a Death Café.

These are for anyone experiencing grief and loss.

or

For those interested in having a conversation about death and dying.

or

For those scared to death about having these conversations, but those who are perhaps curious about seeing what a Death Café is all about.

or

It's for those who feel like connecting with others within the community for a cuppa and a conversation about a universal experience we all have and all will will face.

There is purposefully no agenda, and the group decides where the conversation will go. It's not therapy, but it can be highly therapeutic for those who attend.

I pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging and honour the rich history of storytelling and guidance that generations of First Nations people offer us all.

I would like to acknowledge the diversity of the lived experience and the rich backgrounds of all those who are grieving.

Loss is universal and I am committed to providing a safe, culturally appropriate and inclusive service for people of all ages, ethnicities, faiths, abilities, socio-economic status and gender identity. I am also committed to continuing to learn and grow to better understand the richness of these experiences.
