Loss happens and changes everything.
It cordons off the world that WAS prior, a distinct and defined space filled with memories, experiences, and connections that shaped who you were in it, from the world after, which is marked by change and transformation.
For many, it feels as though there is an impenetrable brick wall that distinctly separates two contrasting phases of their lives, creating a stark divide that can be both daunting and disorienting.

This wall symbolizes the challenges and obstacles that arise when transitioning from one state of being to another, whether it be in personal development, career changes, or significant life events.
For some, this immense transformation occurs seemingly overnight, catching them off guard and leaving them to grapple with the sudden shift in their reality. It’s as if they have been thrust into a completely foreign world where everything feels unfamiliar and overwhelming. The language spoken in this new realm is one that they do not understand, filled with nuances and complexities that can be difficult to decipher. Without a map or clear path forward, navigating through this uncharted territory becomes a formidable task.
Many find themselves wandering aimlessly, unsure of where to go or how to make sense of their new surroundings. This experience can evoke feelings of isolation and confusion, as they struggle to adapt to the changes that have taken place in their lives. It is a journey that requires resilience, patience, and the willingness to explore the unknown, as they seek to find their footing in a landscape that feels entirely alien to them.

The bigger the gap between the world that WAS and the world that IS now, the bigger the grief that follows.
Grief work encompasses a profound journey of self-discovery and transformation, as it involves not only processing the deep sorrow that accompanies loss but also engaging in a reflective exploration of one's identity in the wake of such a significant change.
In this new world, shaped by the absence of a loved one or a cherished aspect of life, individuals are often confronted with a myriad of emotions, ranging from sadness and anger to confusion and even moments of unexpected joy. This complex emotional landscape requires individuals to confront their feelings head-on, rather than avoiding or suppressing them, which can lead to a more authentic understanding of their current state of being.
As one navigates through grief, it becomes essential to face the reality of the loss, acknowledging not only the pain it brings but also the ways in which it alters the fabric of daily life. This process often involves revisiting memories, recognising the impact of the loss on personal relationships, and redefining what it means to live without the presence that once provided comfort and support. Learning to navigate these new unknowns can be daunting; it may require developing new routines, seeking out new connections, or finding solace in different activities that resonate with one's evolving sense of self.
Moreover, grief work is not a linear process; it is filled with ups and downs, moments of clarity interspersed with periods of overwhelming sadness. Throughout this journey, individuals may find themselves questioning their beliefs, values, and what truly matters to them.
This is true when a loved one dies, as well as for all the other losses we face.

🪷 Loss of hope, innocence, identity, planned future
The list goes on and on.
I invite you to consider loss broadly.
When you consider a challenging life event that has happened to you, or to someone you know, can you see it through this lens of the world prior, and the world after?
This may be a helpful way of considering why the impact of loss is so pervasive and far-reaching in our lives.
When we experience loss, whether it be the death of a loved one, the end of a significant relationship, or even the loss of a cherished possession, the emotional and psychological effects can ripple through various aspects of our existence.
The feelings of grief, sadness, and longing often intertwine, creating a complex web of emotions that can influence our daily routines, our mental health, and our interactions with others. Moreover, loss can evoke a profound sense of emptiness and disconnection, making it challenging to engage with the world around us. This pervasive impact is not limited to the immediate aftermath of the loss; it can linger for months or even years, reshaping our perspectives and altering our priorities.
We may find ourselves reflecting on what has been lost, leading to a deeper understanding of our values and what truly matters in life. The social implications of loss are equally significant. Friends and family members may struggle to provide support, not fully understanding the depth of the pain experienced. This can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness for the person grieving.
Additionally, societal norms often dictate how we should respond to loss, which can create further pressure and complicate the grieving process. Ultimately, recognizing the pervasive nature of loss allows us to approach it with greater empathy and understanding, both for ourselves and for others who are navigating similar experiences. It is through this lens that we can begin to appreciate the complexities of grief and the importance of support systems in healing and recovery.
