Grief around Father's Day

Father's Day.

A day of "shoulds" for many.

You "should" be happy. You "should" be celebrating. Your relationship " should" look or feel a certain way. Your Dad "should" be alive. You "should " be able to call yourself a Dad after so long trying to become one. You "should" have your child with you, to be able to still hold them in your arms today.

I'm sorry if today holds some of these "shoulds" for you. The weight of others' expectations or even of your own, and the grief that comes from this.

May I add another "should"?

You "should" be able to feel whatever you need to feel today. If today is one for grief, may it have a seat at the table. If joy is present too, welcome. If longing is joining you, then pull up a chair.

Father's Day can be a challenging time for numerous individuals, evoking a mix of emotions and memories that may not always be easy to navigate. If you find yourself grappling with complex feelings during this occasion, it's important to acknowledge that you are not alone in this experience. I want to extend a compassionate reminder to be kind to yourself not just today, but every day. Self-care and self-compassion are crucial, especially during moments of heightened emotions.

If you are finding it particularly tough to cope, I encourage you to consider seeking guidance and support. Whether it be through therapy, talking to a trusted friend or family member, or engaging in self-care practices that bring you comfort, reaching out for help is a courageous step toward healing. Remember, it's okay to not be okay, and there is strength in vulnerability. You deserve to feel supported and validated in your emotions, especially during times of difficulty.

As you navigate Father's Day and its complexities, know that your feelings are valid, and it's okay to prioritize your well-being. Take things one step at a time, be gentle with yourself, and know that there are resources and people who are ready to offer you the support and guidance you may need. You are deserving of care, understanding, and kindness, today and always. 🪷
